Fishermen's Trail: Salema to Luz

If you are looking for a shorter walking day, we recommend the Fishermen's Trail stage from Salema to Praia da Luz. From Salema the trail follows the south coast east via Boca do Rio and the fishing village of Burgau to Praia da Luz – varied, with plenty of places to stop.

Take your time at Boca do Rio

The open bay at Boca do Rio and the ruins of the Forte de Almádena above it make the first part especially beautiful. It is not entirely effortless: here too there are stony climbs and descents. Water can collect where the stream meets the sea at Boca do Rio, so after rain check the current trail notices before you go.

A break in Burgau

Roughly halfway you pass through Burgau, a small fishing village with narrow lanes and a beach cove. There are cafés and restaurants for a proper break and something to drink. After that the coastal views continue all the way to Luz.

Plan your way back before you start

For a direct ride from Luz back to Salema we would book a taxi in advance. The bus is another option – there are connections via Espiche or Lagos that you should check for your walking day. Otherwise, Uber.

Time and season

The official walking time is about five hours, and the stage is rated medium. The Rota Vicentina recommends walking the Fishermen's Trail between September and June. In storms, heavy rain or bad trail conditions, postpone the walk. Check the Rota Vicentina warning map and the weather warnings before you set off.
