This stage of the Fishermen's Trail leaves the surf village of Carrapateira, passes Praia do Amado and then follows the cliffs south before turning inland to Vila do Bispo. It is one of the more demanding stages in the area: short, steep climbs and descents along the coast, then long stretches on open tracks.
Before you set off
Take enough water for the whole day. After Praia do Amado there is nothing until Vila do Bispo.
Route
From Carrapateira the trail follows tracks and a quiet road to Praia do Amado. The beach is popular with surfers and has surf schools, a beach bar and, just before it, a small coffee shop – a good place for a break, to sit for a while and watch the people on the waves. After the beach the path climbs back onto the cliffs. Expect a few short, steep sections and a stretch of sand; one walking report describes a steep descent to Praia da Pena Furada followed by a long climb back up. Further south the trail turns inland and continues on gravel tracks across open country to Vila do Bispo.
Time and terrain
The official walking time is about six and a half hours, and the stage is rated difficult. Plan for the climbs near the coast – that is where the time goes. There is little shade on the open tracks inland.
The Rota Vicentina recommends walking the Fishermen's Trail between September and June. In storms, heavy rain or bad trail conditions, postpone the walk. Check the Rota Vicentina warning map and the weather warnings before you set off.
Arriving in Vila do Bispo
The stage ends in Vila do Bispo near the supermarkets – the next stage to Sagres starts from here too. Many walkers walk on from Vila do Bispo to our guesthouse.
Eating in Vila do Bispo
At the end of the stage we like Pisco, Ribeira do Poço and A Eira do Mel. More in our restaurant tips.
